item1 Experience

I have been a practicing Occupational therapist (OT) since 1983 and based in London since 1987. My HPC registration is OT 15962.

Main areas of experience includes:
Research and service reviews with a view to further improved quality of care including e.g. care needs in user populations, how needs are met and required development for instance in day services, health and residential care as well as care providing organisations. Subjects have included access, manual handling, dementia care and prevention of entry to residential care as well as health care provision in day services.

Teaching, development and delivery of bespoke training programs, including moving and assisting people for care staff, managers and Community OT’s, manual handling for maintenance staff and their managers, Trusted Assessor training for Case Managers and Housing Officers.

Rehabilitation and enablement with individuals in the home, to facilitate for instance increased ability, independence, choice and quality of life, maintenance of medical conditions, personal and carer safety. Techniques, equipment, adaptation, access to the wider environment, care plans and training are frequently provided. Enablement of people of all ages with brain injury, including cognitive impairment, dyspraxia and a wide range of physical disabilities in the community.

Head IV Occupational therapist with responsibility for Community Rehabilitation, Day Hospital and Long Stay ward services and all occupational therapy staff. Hospital based rehabilitation in all major specialties, with a special interest in neurology/brain injury and rheumatology.

Paediatric Community OT, Social Services. Private treatment of children at home to enhance development, ability in Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Intervention has included hand writing, basic sensory integration and assistance to access coherent, timely support for the child.

Housing OT with responsibility within design, refurbishment and adaptations under the Disabled Facilities Grants legislation, allocation, management of waiting list and policy in a Local Authority.

Independent experience includes assessment, specification and follow-up of adaptation to enable access for all and/or a single person provided to Local Authority, community/residential organisations and individuals. Disabled Facilities Grants (including managing a contract with a Local Authority) and design advice on new built for Local Authority, Housing Associations, Trusts and partnerships.

National Minimum Standard assessments for residential care and some experience of access audits have been provided to a range of customers in private, commercial, voluntary and statutory sectors.

Design of a Centre for Integrated Living, including the environment, developing and running a walk-in Equipment & minor Adaptations service, as well as research and facilitation in collaboration with disabled people.

Member of a Living Options Management Board, allocating funding for equipment/ care and management of a budget as Head OT.

Moving and Handling with people including training, risk assessments, management board work and facilitation of development for care-providing voluntary sector organisations and Local Authority. Creation and piloting of manual handling training for informal carers for a Voluntary Sector Care Provider. Published articles on manual handling.

Nursing/Residential Homes as Auxiliary Nurse, treating OT, National Minimum Standard assessor (environment), Trainer, Researcher, Facilitator.

Provision of medico-legal reports to the Court, including full care and specialist assessments of access/housing and community care needs.
